Paranormal Explosion

A ghost may be able to run, but where the heck can it hide? I'm thinking that must be how some of our intelligent ghost targets must be feeling these days as they come in contact with an ever growing number of novice and professional paranormal investigation groups. Once they were the haunters, now they are the hunted. The cable networks read like a smorgasbord of paranormal dishes to be devoured by those starved to know more about the energy in the shadows between the living world and world of the unexplained. Ghost Adventures, Most Haunted, Scariest Places on Earth, Paranormal State, and in my opinion the best of the bunch - Ghosthunters featuring The Atlantic Paranormal Society are ever present on television and the internet. Many of the shows are available any time, any place for viewing with the push of the buttons on a remote control or the click of a mouse. Not only are there many opportunities to view shows about paranormal investigating, but one can also tailor their viewing opportunities to meet their personal preferences with regards to the basic types of investigator and investigations conducted. Some of these groups we see each week view their work as entertainment first, while others still cling to the hope that they can conduct an investigation for the purpose of discovery, the way they did long before the flashlights they carry were overpowered by the bright lights of television cameras. I was at an event last year in Lilydale NY with Grant Wilson and Jason Hawes and they were asked about the beginnings of the Ghosthunters television show on the Sci-Fi Network. They spoke of how they were approached many times by production companies pitching ideas about how a show should be made about their paranormal investigations. Grant and Jason wanted no part of it, attempting to prevent the further sensationalization of an field of study still in it's infancy which they hoped to provide with credibility. Unfortunately, the production company countered with the statement that if TAPS did not want to do the show there would certainly be somebody more willing, and possibly less sincere. TAPS did go ahead with allowing the production company to shoot the show, and it was eventually sold to Sci-Fi as a series. This has all worked out for the folks from TAPS on many fronts, both in regards to TAPS recognition and opportunity and most likely leading to some unexpected financial success. I admire the fact that they continue to keep their methods the same as they always have, scientific and concrete. Now, if you fall in to the group of people that like their paranormal investigations with a little built in scare and anxiety, then there certainly are shows for you as well. Some of the other shows feature psychics and sensitives and demonologists as the primary tool of investigation. Some actually lock the investigators up for the night at the location. Some create supernatural back stories, such as having a demon following and investigator from site to site. I think, no matter which type of tv investigation style you enjoy, it is paramount that we remember that for every minute of action we see on tv, every evp we hear, or thermal image we see, there were far more than sixty minutes put in to investigating and reviewing the evidence. Paranormal investigation is a marathon, not a sprint.
One of my favorite things to do when I visit an older city in the United States is to go on a ghost tour or a haunted walk. I've never attended one yet where I expected to see a ghost or hear a disembodied voice first hand, most likely because my eyes are blurred and my ears are rattled from all the digital camera flash going off as the would-be investigators point and click at every nook and cranny of every historic building, alley, and bush we may pass. These events are also entertainment, great entertainment and very informative about the history of a location.
This leads us to the business of paranormal investigation. While most groups proudly boast that they provide their services free of charge, they are also more than happy to sell you a t-shirt or two, develop websites peddling voice recorders, emf detectors, and k2 meters. For a fee you can attend classes on how to be a paranormal investigator, attend a lecture featuring a tv star paranormal investigator, go on an investigation at a famous place featured on a tv show with a tv star investigator, or subscribe to a magazine featuring a paranormal investigation group featured on tv. Ghosts ain't white these days, ghosts are green. Go ahead and google "Haunted Hotels where you can stay overnight." No doubt about it, a few spirits can sure extend a season and fill some empty rooms, especially in Autumn when all people seem to catch the paranormal bug. My current favorite is an opportunity to rent a haunted location so you can investigate it all night, kinda like buying a round of golf or getting an all day ride pass at your local amusement park. I have absolutely no problem with anyone who is able to take their interest in paranormal investigation and turn it in to a financial windfall. Remember, this can only happen if there are people willing to fork over money for the product they offer. I only hope these folks have the best interests of the field in mind, not just the best interests of their wallets. If you are in it for the right reasons, have at it.
All of this leads me to my initial thought regarding the explosion of interest and participation in paranormal investigation. While I've highlighted some ways groups have reached the top rung of the recognition ladder, there are thousands of other groups that will pop up in the next few years that will do their best to present themselves as the real deal in an effort to gain fame rather than in an effort to document the truth or debunk the fiction. If you are interested in being involved in paranormal investigation it is important to have a good understanding of what your goals are and how you intend to get there. Paranormal investigation is a field where a person must foremost be ethical and truthful. Paranormal investigation is a field that takes devotion, patience, and an clear, concrete, and consistent understanding of the investigatory methodologies you decide to use. You must also understand that your actions have an impact on the field itself. Actions by a group or investigator that are unethical or illegal can set the field back and deny others the opportunity to access locations that have presumed paranormal activity. No matter your feelings about the best way to investigate, it is important to recognize that there is more than one road to reach a destination. Be a positive representative of the field and good luck on your journey. Remember, there are a lot more of us out there than there were a few years ago, and the ghosts have noticed.

The Hotel Lenhart

C.C.P.G. was asked to investigate the Hotel Lenhart in December of 2007 before the client was scheduled to leave town for a couple months. We had plenty of time to investigate and review the evidence, and now that the reveal is complete we are able to present this data to the public. The hotel is located in Bemus Point, N.Y. and was built in 1881.

Hollenbeck Cemetery

Hollenbeck Cemetery in Chautauqua County NY is a very old and interesting cemetery. It is supposed to date somewhere in 1700s. Having lived less than a couple miles from it all my life...I just learned of its existence this year. We decided to check it out and try a couple EVP sweeps of the old cemetery. To our surprise this cemetery seems to really have a habit of producing EVPs and anomalous pictures.
The first sweep was done by one of our lead investigators on a whim. He was alone and had some time to kill and he decided to stop in to Hollenbeck and do a quick EVP / Video investigation. He came back with a couple really good EVPs. Since then we have been back to Hollenbeck a few times, and we have captured a few good EVPs along with a few anomalous pictures. We will keep hitting this cemetery now and then in hopes of capturing more data. I will be uploading the pictures to the website soon.

Below are some of the EVPs captured at Hollenbeck Cemetery by C.C.P.G.
You can download them or view more data & images from Hollenbeck here
